Online MBE Tips — 5 Important things to keep in mind!
If you are taking the MBE online, here are five important online MBE tips to keep in mind. The remote MBE will not be the same as a pen-and-paper in-person MBE, so it is important to adapt your study techniques accordingly!
Online MBE Tips — 5 Important things to keep in mind!
1. Be aware of what you can and cannot do.
In most jurisdictions, you will be able to highlight text on MBE questions and strike out answers.
You will also be able to skip questions, move back and forth between them, and come back to questions that you flag.
While you will likely not be able to use scrap paper, you will likely be offered virtual scrap paper.
Keep all of this in mind. If you get to a question you do not know, flag it, skip it, come back to it. You do not have to answer each question in chronological order.
2. Check your jurisdiction’s rules.
The online MBE is new — the first time it was administered was in the fall of 2020. (And this was a 100-question exam, not technically the “real” MBE).
So, please check your jurisdictions rules. Also make sure to check with your exam software provider to see what the exam software allows you to do.
3. Remember to not skip any MBE questions.
Answer every MBE question online just as you would in person. Striking out three incorrect answer choices will not mean you answered the question correctly! You have to actually choose an answer choice for each question. (Also remember you are not penalized for choosing an incorrect answer choice — i.e. points are not subtracted from your score if you are incorrect. So answer every question posed!)
4. Practice under test conditions.
This means that you should take online MBE exams. (We have an online MBE Qbank with real MBE questions available here. You can also find questions available elsewhere online, including through the NCBE.)
Practicing under test conditions is the best way to feel familiar with the exam.
Answer questions on your laptop with a single monitor (rather than using a phone, tablet, or dual-monitor set up). Again, this is how you will be taking the actual MBE!
5. Practice in your testing environment.
Practice at least one full exam (preferably during exam hours) in your testing environment. This way, you can gauge: is it too hot? too cold? is your chair comfortable? are there unexpected distracting sounds coming in from outside? Use the online format to your advantage by making yourself as comfortable as possible for the exam.
You will feel more confident and comfortable if you are able to correct any unnecessary distractions ahead of exam day.
