Maryland Officially Adopts the Uniform Bar Exam

The Maryland Board of Law Examiners officially announced its decision to adopt the UBE on November 20th. An advisory committee, appointed by the Maryland Court of Appeals, suggested adopting the UBE in October 2017. Although Maryland will start giving the UBE, in lieu of its current state bar exam, in 2019, it is unclear whether this change will be in effect for the February or July 2019 bar exam, However, the Maryland Board of Law Examiners UBE announcement stated it intended to keep its current bar exam form until at least July 2019. It seems a strong bet that will be the first administration of the UBE in Maryland. We will have more details as they become available!

Are there any other developments to report right now?

According to the NCBE website, Maryland will require a jurisdiction-specific component. UBE jurisdictions always give the MBE, MEE, and MPT. Some states, however, also decide to give an additional component testing state-specific law. It is unclear now exactly how Maryland will handle this portion. Typically, it appears as an additional multiple-choice or essay section.

As of right now, it is also unclear what the passing score in Maryland will be. Most jurisdictions opt for scores between 260 and 280 on a 400-point scale.
