How to Pass the Uniform Bar Exam: Avoid the Top 5 Mistakes Students taking the Uniform Bar Exam Make
How to Pass the Uniform Bar Exam: In this post on how to pass the uniform bar exam, we examine the top five mistakes we notice students make on the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) We also reveal how we advise students to avoid them!
How to Pass the Uniform Bar Exam: Avoid the Top 5 Mistakes Students taking the Uniform Bar Exam Make
1. Preparing minimally for the MPT.
We write about this frequently because we see this mistake so often! Students forget that the MPT is worth 20% of their overall score (or the equivalent of 70 MBE questions!!!) It also requires ZERO knowledge of the law! What it does require, however, is dedicated consistent practice in the months leading up to the bar exam.
Do not put your MPT practice off! Start preparing early and often for the MPT!
2. Not practicing real multiple-choice questions.
Many students use Barbri, Kaplan, or Themis questions as their primary source of practice for multiple-choice questions These are not bad questions, but they are not as good as the real deal! Acquire actual released multistate bar exam (MBE) questions to maximize your UBE score! Many students say this makes a huge difference in how they perform on the MBE. Not sure where to get questions? Read this post on where to find actual bar exam questions.
3. Not completing any timed exams.
If you fail the bar exam, fail it because it is hard. Don’t fail it because you didn’t adequately time yourself. This includes essay exams, MPT exams, and MBE exams! We recommend that students begin timing themselves early on in bar prep. But, rather than starting with a three-hour exam, just start with a one-hour exam, and time yourself based on the questions you have covered. For example, if you started with Real Property and Evidence, do a one-hour “timed exam” where you complete a Real Property essay question and Evidence question at random. Also, answer 33 multiple-choice questions in an hour.
Next week, answer an MPT question in an hour and a half. Eventually, bump it up to two hours (where you answer 4 essay questions or 66 multiple-choice questions) after a couple weeks. Then, finally, complete a few three-hour timed exams (where you answer 2 MPT’s, or six essay questions, or 100 multiple-choice questions.
This will not only help your timing on test day, it will also help your confidence!
4. Blindly following a bar review course checklist.
We receive panicked calls, usually from first-time takers, one month before the bar exam. They say “I’ve spent all my time on lectures and I realize I am not actually learning anything.” Rather than studying efficiently, they “trust in the course” without ever reflecting on whether it is actually helping them. This might be because they are paralyzed by fear of failing the bar exam, or because they feel the course “knows” best.
If you find yourself in this situation, reach out for help as soon as possible!
5. Not memorizing the nuances of the law.
Passing the bar exam requires that you complete four steps (usually in this order although there is some overlap): (1) get good bar exam outlines; (2) understand the law; (3) memorize the law; (4) apply the law. A lot of students go right from going to lecture to doing practice questions. Then they completely skip memorizing the law. It would be nice if the bar exam tested the bigger picture of the law. Unfortunately, it tests the nuances. This means that you have to know the law very well!
