How To Increase Your Speed On The MPT
How To Increase Your Speed On The MPT
If your state has the MPT (Multistate Performance Test) as a section on your bar exam, consider yourself lucky. Why? Unlike other sections of the bar exam that require hours upon hours of learning, memorizing, and applying the law, a little effort goes a long way on the MPT. To learn how to increase your speed on the MPT, follow these tips!
How To Increase Your Speed On The MPT
1. Keep It Simple
The MPT is not the place to show off your creative writing skills. Instead, your goal should be to efficiently respond to your assigned task. Common tasks include writing an objective memo, persuasive brief, demand letter, opinion letter, or a “wildcard” task.
The task memo will explain who you are writing to and how to structure your response. Pay careful attention to your task memo and refer to it while you’re writing to make sure you’re staying on target!

2. Practice, Practice, Practice
Some students don’t even bother preparing for the MPT because it requires no outside law. If you have that mindset, you’re leaving valuable points on the table. Instead, spend some time practicing writing your MPT responses. While you’re at it, don’t forget to time yourself so you’re accustomed to the pressure on test day.
Once you’ve written a response, adopt the mindset of a test grader and review your answer. Did you address each part of the question? Did you waste time including unnecessary information? If you’re short on time, you can outline your MPT responses instead of writing them out. The more you practice, the quicker you’ll be on test day!

3. Have A Strategy On Test Day
By the time test day rolls around, you should have a refined strategy for approaching the MPT. Start by skimming the table of contents to gain a general idea of the times of sources you’ll need to analyze. Then, we recommend using half your time to read the file and outline your answer, so you don’t spend too much time on any one issue. To save time, write citations while you outline and save yourself the trouble of looking up sources at the end.
When it comes to the bar exam, every point counts. Follow these tips to increase your speed on the MPT and put yourself in the best position to pass when you take the exam!
