How Hard is the Texas Bar Exam Now That It Is UBE?
In our experience, students with state-specific bars always want to know how their test compares to other versions of the bar exam. Bar takers in Texas will no longer have to speculate: starting in February 2021, Texas will administer the Universal Bar Exam, replacing the Texas Bar Exam and joining the 36 other jurisdictions to use the UBE.
How Hard is the Texas Bar Exam Now That It Is UBE?
How is the UBE different from the old Texas bar exam?
For the most part, the Texas bar exam had similar sections when compared with the UBE. The biggest change is that instead of 12 essays on Texas law (on the old Texas Bar Exam), the UBE only has 6 essays testing general law. If you’ve been worried about the difficulty of the Texas bar because of those Texas-specific essays, this might help you sleep easier!
Is it Hard to Pass the Texas Bar?
The minimum passing scores for the UBE vary by jurisdiction. Alabama, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, and North Dakota all have a passing score of 260, the lowest out of all UBE jurisdictions. Alaska has the highest, with a minimum passing score of 280. The phrase “Everything is bigger in Texas” luckily does not apply to UBE passing scores — Texas is right in the middle of the pack, with a minimum score of 270.
Is there a Texas-specific component on the Texas Bar Exam?
Although Texas will use the UBE going forward, there is still a Texas-specific element required for passing the bar. This Texas Law Component is satisfied by completing the Texas Law Course. Anyone seeking admission to practice in Texas must complete this course, unless you passed a Texas Bar Exam given before February 2021.
How Can You Complete the Texas Law Course?
The Texas Law Course is free and available through the Texas State Bar website. The course is a series of video presentations on Texas law from practicing Texas attorneys. At the end of each video, you will need to answer several questions designed to check your understanding of the material you just covered. In all, the Texas Law Course should take about 12 hours to complete.
