How Can I Know I Will Pass The Bar Exam?
How Can I Know I Will Pass The Bar Exam?
We’ve always thought that one of the worst things about the whole bar exam process is the long wait between test day and when results are released. In fact, many of our students report feeling more anxious during this wait than they did before the test! We don’t have a crystal ball, but we do have some experience in gauging student success. If you, like so many others, can’t stop thinking “Did I pass the bar exam?”, these signs may give you some peace of mind.
How Can I Know I Will Pass The Bar Exam?
1. Focus During the Exam
Ideally, test day is boring and uneventful. But every year, we hear horror stories about things going wrong during the bar exam. Some people develop migraines, go into labor, get sick, or get into a fender bender on the way to the exam. If you were able to stay focused on your test without being affected by an unexpected issue then there is a good chance that you did pass the bar exam!
2. You Finished the Bar Exam
The time constraints on the bar exam are one of the most challenging aspects of the exam. However, if you were able to complete the entire exam, you put yourself in the best position to pass the bar. This means answering every single multiple-choice question, writing complete essays, and finishing the performance test (if included in your jurisdiction). Of course, not finishing a section does not mean that you are doomed — plenty of people skip questions or write incomplete responses but pass the bar exam.
3. You Performed Well During Practice Tests
If you were getting around 70% of your practice MBE questions correct during bar prep, that is a good sign that you’ll pass that portion of the exam. In most jurisdictions, a passing score is between 58-67% correct. Learn what a passing MBE score is in your state here.
Your practice and comfort with different essay topics during practice can also inform your bar performance. When you were writing the actual essays, did you feel well prepared? If you felt comfortable with your responses, this is a great sign that you passed the exam.
4. You Did Well Your First Year of Law School
If you did well during your 1L year, you have a strong foundation for success on the bar exam. After all, the bar tests many of the subjects covered in the core classes during law school. However, we’ve worked with many successful test-takers who did not do as well during their 1L year — it just takes a little extra preparation!
