How Can I Have a Fun Summer Before Law School?
For many incoming law students, the summer before school starts is a hectic time. You may be moving across the country, working full time in order to save up, or busy with other obligations (or all of the above!). Still, you should take advantage of your “0L” summer to do some of the fun things you won’t have as much time for once school starts. Spend time with your friends and family, plan a road trip, have a spa day, or pick up a new skill or hobby. During orientation, you’re bound to get asked how you spent your summer so finding something fun and creative to do is a great conversation starter as you get to know your new classmates and professors those first few weeks of school.
If your idea of relaxing is staying indoors this summer, here is a list of movies and books we recommend to unwind. It’s geared towards bar prep students but it fits for prelaw students as well!
If you’re moving to a new city for law school, consider heading into town a little early and exploring your new home. There will surely be lots of activities that are new to you to explore. This is not only a great way to have fun but it also helps you get acquainted with your new surrounding. You may be able to offer insight to other new students trying to figure out their new locale. (If this applies to you, be sure to also check out these tips for how to settle into a new city before law school!)
Take advantage of this time to relax and have fun — you won’t regret it once the semester starts!
Will I Get Behind If I Don’t Prepare During the Summer Before Law School?
While some students prefer to take a law school prep course, your mileage may vary. Many law students don’t prepare at all during the summer before law school and go on to get great grades during their 1L year. Others find that a law school prep course gives them some peace of mind, especially during the first days of school. Why not prepare for law school AND have fun? So even if you do decide to take a law school prep course, make sure you’re building in time for fun activities with your family and friends. They’ll probably be seeing less of you once school starts, so make the most of your summer before law school! Check out our free law school prep course that lets you work through the material at your own pace. So you can do a little prep between trips, outings, and social events!
