How To Create A Bar Exam Study Plan Tailored To You!
How To Create A Bar Exam Study Plan Tailored To You!: It is rare that students use just one course or resource to pass the bar exam! Many students consult several different resources to create a well-tailored bar exam study plan. Here, we tell you how to create a bar exam study plan that is tailored to what you need to pass the bar exam.
How To Create A Bar Exam Study Plan Tailored To You!
1. First, take an inventory of your strengths and weaknesses.
Be honest with yourself here. Consider your experience in law school if it is difficult to answer these questions.
Is essay writing a strength? Is multiple-choice a strength?
Virtually every bar exam has a multiple-choice component and an essay component.
General strengths and weaknesses
- Am I accountable to an online program or do I need to go in person?
- Do I need individualized feedback or can I do fine with a general commercial program?
- Am I able to follow a schedule?
- Am I disciplined enough to treat bar study like a full time (or full time+) job?
Subject strengths and weaknesses
The multistate bar exam subjects are:
- Real Property
- Evidence
- Torts
- Contracts and Sales
- Criminal Law and Procedure
- Constitutional Law
- Civil Procedure
If you are in a uniform bar exam or multistate essay exam jurisdiction, you will also have to know the following for the essay portion.
- Family Law
- Secured Transactions
- Conflicts of Law
- Decedents’ Estates
- Trusts and Future Interests
- Corporations and LLCs
- Agency and Partnership
(If you are in a jurisdiction that does not use MEE’s, check the jurisdiction’s website to see the subjects tested.)
Are you particularly strong in any of those subjects? Are you particularly weak in any of them?
2. Once you know your strengths and weaknesses, ask yourself what you can do to improve upon them.
If multiple-choice is a weakness: Make sure you are using real MBE questions when you practice (rather than course-invented questions). This will give you an advantage right off the bat. Also, consider getting a tutor to help you with MBE strategies and MBE subjects. (Want to know more about our bar exam private tutoring services? Check out this link.)
If essay-writing is a weakness: Choose a course that allows you to submit several essays. If your course does not, consider getting personalized bar exam essay feedback on a weekly basis. Practice is key. And having a regular essay writing program can keep you accountable. (We also have a wonderful MEE essay course that many students use in conjunction with a commercial course because it covers the MEE materials in a super-efficient way and also comes with several graded essays!)
If you have a hard time remaining accountable or disciplined: Attend in-person lectures. Create an overall bar exam study schedule for yourself as well as weekly bar exam checklists and have someone you remain accountable to, whether it is a bar study partner or a tutor.
If you struggle with a specific subject: Change your bar review course’s study schedule to spend more time on that subject. If possible, complete that subject first starts so that you get it out of the way. Or take some time to review it before your bar review course even begins. Lastly, if you still cannot understand the subject, consider a tutor.
