Can I Practice MPTs in Preparation for the California Bar Exam?
While the California Bar Exam is infamous for its difficulty, two recent changes should give California test-takers hope. First of all, the California Supreme Court lowered the passing score. Second, the California Performance Test switched from 3 hours to one 90 minute test. If you’re wondering how this change should impact your preparation for the California Bar Exam, read on.

How is the California Performance Test Different from the MPT?
The California Performance Test is different from the MPT in several ways. The California Performance Test is one 90 minute section, instead of the two on the MPT. It uses a different fictional jurisdiction (so carefully evaluate the weight of authorities you’re given). The MPT has also tested a wider variety of tasks than the California Performance Test.
Are MPTs Useful Preparation for the California Bar Exam?
While they have their differences, taking practice MPTs is a great way to prepare for the California test. Because the two sections usually test similar tasks, practicing MPTs is a great way to familiarize yourself with topics you may see on test day. Don’t just complete a practice MPT for the sake of completing it, however. Instead, take the time to review your response with the model answer and point sheets. Make sure you hit all of the key issues without wasting time on irrelevant topics. This will help you improve your writing and your timing!
Where Can I Find MPTs?
To put yourself in a position to pass the California Performance Test, you can find practice MPTs from a variety of sources. We break down great places to find free MPTs here, but the NCBE website and state bar websites are good places to start.
If you’re studying in preparation for the California Bar Exam, do not neglect the California Performance Test. A good score on this section boosts your chances of passing the written portion of the bar exam and can take some of the pressure off the essay section. A great way to maximize your score is to take MPTs under realistic timing conditions.
