What Is The Average MPT Score I Need To Pass?

What Is The Average MPT Score I Need To Pass?: The Multistate Performance Test (MPT) is the most overlooked portion of the bar exam. However, it is worth 20 % of your overall grade, so don’t ignore it! Since many people leave studying for the MPT until late in their bar prep, we are often asked what is the average MPT score a student needs to pass. We’ll go over our thoughts in this post!

What Is The Average MPT Score I Need To Pass?

In most states, a 4 is considered and average and will get you a passing mark on the MPT. Check out our MPT score sheet when you are ready to score your MPT. Once you’ve done that, read this post about MPT grading rubrics to help you break down what should be present to get a 4 on your MPT.

If you want to see specifically what MPT score you need to pass, here are some specific numbers, depending on what your jurisdiction considers a passing score.

• A 3.9 is considered passing in Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions that require a 260 to pass.
• A 4.0 is considered passing in Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions that require a 266 to pass.
• A 4.1 is considered passing in Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions that require a 273 to pass.
• A 4.2 is considered passing in Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions that require a score of 280 to pass.

For those who like math:

In a Uniform Bar Exam jurisdiction, the MPT and MEE together are worth 200 points together. The MPT is worth 20% (or 80 of those points). The MEE is worth 30% (or 120 of those points).

If the MPT is worth 80 points total, each MPT answer is worth 40 points out of the 400 potential points.

A score of 4 out of 6 is equivalent to a 26.67 points out of 40.

If you received scores of 26.67 on each of the 2 MPT answers, you would receive a score of 53.33/80.  An 53.33/80 is a percentage of 66.67%, which is passing for jurisdictions that require a score of 266. (It is above passing if your jurisdiction requires lower than a 266 and at or a little below passing if your jurisdiction requires a score higher than a 266.) If your jurisdiction requires a score of 280, you would want to aim for a score of at least 28 on each MPT, which breaks down to a score of 4.2. If your jurisdiction only requires a 260, you need an average MPT score of 3.9 to pass the bar exam!

So basically, as long as you are scoring between a 3.9 and a 4.2, you should be well on your way to passing the MPT portion of the exam!

Of course remember you do not have to get a minimum score on the MPT portion. You only need whatever the magic number is (e.g. a number between 260 and 280 depending on your jurisdiction). This is just what you should aim to get if you want to pass the MPT portion of the exam!
